The Skinny: This sizable estate on Washington's Bainbridge Island, a ferry ride away from Seattle, looks more like something you might find in the highlands of Asia, and that's no accident. Designed by the architecture firm Miller Hull, the 10,500-square-foot mansion is "feng shui compliant" -- unlike a certain billion-dollar home in India -- and was built around existing old-growth trees to give the impression that the house had been there forever.

In fact, it was completed in 2002, and boasts four bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, a 500-square-foot art studio, 4,000-bottle wine cellar hewn from imported stone, and absurd materials sourcing, like "1,000-year-old flawless recycled cedar" and "beams from a shipwreck." The house, which caps a 13-acre property with views of the Olympic Mountains, is listed for $12.8 million.
