When reality intrudes on a superhuman schedule Premium Content

I don't know about you, but I'm superhuman. I've always had a knack for getting more done in 24 hours than expected, which made real estate a slam-dunk kind of career.

Give me two hours in my office and I have a whole day's worth of work done. Four interrupted hours and I might as well go on vacation! I jest, but only a little. Time management has always been my strong suit.  more...

Reverse mortgage not just a 'last resort'

The number of Americans 65 and older who continue to work has risen in the past decade. The unexpected rise can be traced to a variety of factors, including shell-shocked retirement accounts, falling interest rates on savings tools, fewer company pension plans, and the inability to save.

Many of these people have raced to take part-time employment, and baseball spring-training facilities are a prime example. There were seniors selling tickets, programs, hot dogs and popcorn, plus acting as ushers and parking lot directors in nearly all of the recently completed Cactus and Grapefruit League games.  more...

Shacks a stark reminder of 1906 earthquake Premium Content

It's easy to pass them by without a second glance -- a pair of small, green wooden shacks sitting side by side at the Fifth Street Marina in Oakland, Calif.

But these nondescript dwellings are noteworthy, because they're among the last surviving examples of more than 5,600 temporary homes thrown up in haste as winter approached in the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.  more...

Sliding closet doors may test your patience

By Bill and Kevin Burnett, Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

Q: I have a hall closet with two wooden doors that slide on a track. They are very old and have been painted many times. One of the doors got stuck in the track, and I couldn't get it to move smoothly. So I yanked the door out, and now I can't get it back on the track at all.

Now I have a closet with one door and one open space, and the second door propped against a wall. There is a little roller on the top of the door that must have something to do with getting it back on track. Do you guys have any thoughts on this?  more...

Through at least 2030, the housing market will depend on the desires and fortunes of two generations: baby boomers and a group primarily made up of their offspring, echo boomers, according to a recently released report prepared for the Washington, D.C.-based Bipartisan Policy Center.

The report, "Demographic Challenges and Opportunities for U.S. Housing Markets," was written by researchers at the Urban Institute, the University of Southern California, and the National Association of Realtors.  more...

Fannie, Freddie accelerating short sales

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will require loan servicers who need more than 30 days to make a decision on a short-sale offer to provide weekly status updates and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down no later than 60 days after receiving an offer.

The new short-sale timelines, announced this week by Fannie and Freddie's regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, take effect in June as the first step in a broader effort to "develop enhanced and aligned strategies for facilitating short sales, deeds-in-lieu and deeds-for-lease in order to help more homeowners avoid foreclosure."  more...
